Growing up, I always seemed to be perplexed by a specific, yet popular question: “How do I create and cultivate a relationship with my Savior Jesus Christ and my Heavenly Father?” I can’t physically see them, so how am I supposed to create this substantial relationship that will last forever and forever benefit my life?

Yes, I knew who my Savior was. I knew He was the Son of God; I knew He was my brother; I knew that He died for all mankind; I knew that He suffered in Gethsemane for all of our pains and afflictions. Yes, I knew who Heavenly Father was. He was the creator of all things, both the heavens and the earth and all other things in-between—including ME. But I needed and was looking for more.

Throughout my life, I attended church every Sunday, where I would learn about Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father. We were taught that through prayer, we can feel closer to them both and feel of their love and guidance. We were taught to study the scriptures for a better understanding of this gospel. It wasn’t until I left home for 18 months to serve my Heavenly Father in Orlando, Florida, that I truly found a relationship with both of them.

Once upon a time, I was told by an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ that not only was Jesus Christ was his personal Savior but also his friend—and He could be mine too! I was struck so hard when he said those words. When you think of your friends, you think personal! Your friends know everything about you—likes, dislikes, what’s good for you, what’s not, and everything in between. You talk to them about everything every single day. Sound about right? So to think that Jesus Christ could ALSO be my friend struck me to my core. I realized that very moment, I needed to CHOOSE Him and become friends with my Savior Jesus Christ.

The fact is, you decide what relationship you want to have with your Savior Jesus Christ and your Heavenly Father. So I as your fellow internet friend, I am going to give you my few pieces of friendly advice on how you can turn Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father into YOUR personal friend!

FIRST.

Pray. Pour your soul out to your Father in Heaven both morning and night! Don’t just pray simply. Tell him everything—the very worries and concerns of your heart, the daily triumphs, the weaknesses that we ALL have, gratitude, everything! It’s pretty exhilarating actually! You are loved more than you can imagine, and you have a Heavenly heritage that is longing to help you!

SECOND.

Serve. I realized that when I’m anxiously engaged in serving and loving others, my Savior is right there with me. When we fill our lives with acts of the Savior, we feel not only the love he has for others, but for us as well. My friends, we will constantly draw closer to the Savior as we serve others with loving arms. I can also promise you that it will not only bring peace into your life but immense gratitude.

THIRD.

Change course. One of the most beautiful things that the Savior offers us is the chance to start over and try again. He gives us endless chances! Throughout my life, through big mistakes and little mistakes, I’ve come to realize that He is always there and that his love is endless.

Girls, you are SO loved—so loved by a loving Heavenly Father and a loving Elder Brother who are longing to be a part of your life. They are longing to be YOUR FRIEND. So please let them. I know that when we make Christ the center of our lives and our very best friend that we will be happier. So take His hand. Today, choose to make him your friend. It is OH SO WORTH IT.
