I feel like as girls and women we tend to spend more time tearing each other down instead of building each other up. Do we do it to feel better about ourselves? Maybe we just simply do it to tear others down.
A couple of weeks ago I was in a Sunday school lesson and the teacher said that his Sunday school teacher told him something that changed him and the way he treated everyone. It changed me, so maybe it will help you too! He said, “There are two kinds of people in this world: the builders and the destroyers.” The builders only build people up. They are the encouragers. They are the ones who stop and ask if you’re okay or who give you a compliment on your outfit. The destroyers only tear people down. They are rude and only say mean or negative things to others. It is important to remember that when we are building or destroying people we are also building or destroying ourselves. Each morning we have to make the decision about which kind of person we are going to be.
Do you notice that you don’t feel good about yourself when you are beating someone down? Sometimes we hurt others because we think putting them down will build us up (and maybe it does but just for a minute). But how is it worth it when you just made another person feel bad about who they are?
After you give a compliment, a smile, an encouraging word you feel SO much better. Don’t believe me? Go and sincerely compliment somebody and then pay attention to how you feel. When you build others up you build yourself up too.
It always makes me so sad to see people comment rude things on others’ social media pages. Social media is not an outlet to say hateful things about other people. A good rule of thumb is: If you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.
Just think if we all went about our day empowering, encouraging, and complimenting each other. Just think of that domino effect! We’d all be happier & more approving of ourselves and others, and we would spread so much more love. Nobody wants to be a destroyer! Let’s build great people. Let’s be builders together.
