Hey MTTB readers! We have a fabulous interview to share with you with the one and only Summer Bellessa! Summer is a model, actress, fashion writer, entrepreneur and half of The Girls with Glasses Show and Blog. Summer is a remarkable example of using her talents and abilities to bring happiness to others, and we’re so lucky to have her here to answer a few questions for us!
You have accomplished a lot so far in your life! What motivates you?
For me, it comes down to loving to create. Almost everyday I wake up excited about what I can do, who I can connect, what we can make, and how we can share it. Since I’ve had kids, being able to help take care of my family financially is a big motivator too.
Tell me about yourself as a child and a teenager, have you always loved fashion?
Yes, always. I remember being really young, like 2 or 3, and looking in Quincinera shops, loving all the ruffles and lace. I always had an opinion on what I wanted to wear, and my mom was usually supportive in my artistic flair. Once I got into high school, I loved to thrift shop and experiment with styles. In my sophomore or junior year, I wore a different outfit to school every day. I loved to mix and match things and find new ways to wear the same pieces. I never wanted to be pigeon holed into one look. I’d wear Jnco’s and a baby tee one day, a plaid baby doll dress with boots another, and a preppie plaid skirt with knee high socks the next. It was the nineties and I wanted to try everything.
One of your goals for The Girls with Glasses is to bring happiness to others. How has spreading happiness changed you personally?
I’m not sure if focusing on spreading happiness has changed me, but I do know, that it’s important to have a purpose beyond just making videos, or writing blog posts. You have to know why you’re doing it. And your why, may be different than ours, but it helps you create things that are worth being created, and it connects you with your community, because you care about them. Not just as a means to make a living, or a customer, but you really want them to be successful in their life.
What have you learned about yourself through your career?
Especially when you’re in a creative field, you have to faith that you’ll find your place, and humility, in exactly what that place is. Ten years ago, Brooke and I would’ve never thought we’d be making YouTube videos for a living. I started out modeling and acting, Brooke was touring with American Idol, but yet, here we are. It’s not where we thought, but it is where we’re suppose to be. Our lifestyle is perfect for raising a family, and putting those things that are important to us first. In both of our initial fields, that might’ve been more of a struggle.
Is there anything specific you do to boost your creativity?
I love to watch movies, go to museums, read books, travel, and explore nature. It’s also important to understand your ebbs and flows as a creator. if something isn’t coming right away, you might need to give it a break and then come back to it. That’s another reason it’s great to have a business partner. We’re able to bounce ideas off each other, and usually we can get a spark going. My husband Kerry is the third “Girl With Glasses.” He operates our camera, and gives hilarious and clever input too.
What is one item of clothing you feel you can’t live without?
I have a long vintage dress with bell sleeves, in a bold floral. It’s comfortable, forgiving, and always gets compliments. I’m always wearing things that are easy to throw on for any event, even if the event is running into the grocery store.
What trend are you most excited about this fall?
I just love fall in general. I love sweaters and boots, plaids and textures. I like pastels as a trend for fall, It’s nice to keep things bright and airy for a change instead of grabbing the more traditional autumnal colors.
If you could give your teenage self one piece of advice what would it be?
You are stronger than you think. Don’t be afraid to be who you know you are. Caring about what people think can be such a crutch. You are the one that has to like you at the end of the day. Nothing else will make you happy. That’s a little more than one piece of advice, but it’s all in the same vein.
