When I was growing up, I didn’t feel like I was super “great” at any one thing. I played different sports here and there, did a gymnastics class or two, and tried piano lessons a few times, but nothing ever really stuck with me. I remember one of my friends was an amazing dancer and another friend could play the violin unbelievably well. Each of them spent numerous hours every week at lessons and recitals. I remember looking at them and wishing I had a ‘thing’ like they did.  I thought that since I hadn’t excelled in any dance or violin classes like they had, I would never be able to develop those talents and that it was simply too late for me.

It wasn’t until I got older that I realized how truly flawed that mindset actually was!

It is NEVER too late to learn a new skill or develop a new talent. You should always be trying something new—no matter your background, age, or situation.

About two years ago I had the desire to run a half-marathon. I am honestly not sure why; it just seemed exciting and fun to train for something and then do it. I was never on the cross-country or track teams, and I hadn’t really ever run any real long distances. But regardless, I set out to do it. As I looked for training plans on the internet, I was shocked by the amount of intimidating articles and comments being made by different runners about how hard running long distances would be for someone just starting out. It worried me, but after a few months of simple training, I hoped I would be fine and I ran the race anyways. It ended up being an unbelievably fun experience that I loved!

Did it take some hard work? Sure. Was it impossible? Absolutely not!

I realized that sometimes the world around us likes to make itself look very scary and intimidating. However, many things in this world are a lot more possible than you may think. The only thing determining what you do, should be desire—because you have all of the capability in the world. Most successful people in this world are the people who were willing to try something, even if it may not have made sense to everyone else.

Don’t put yourself in a box! You can try anything you want to, no matter what experience or ‘accolades’ you do/don’t have. Try out for a new team, run a marathon, join a club, volunteer, do whatever you would like. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try something new even if you are are a bit scared.

And above all, remember that are a daughter of God. There are no limits to what you can do with His help.
