Let me begin by saying that I believe getting good sleep is so pivotal to a person’s overall wellbeing and happiness! However, I have not always been one to be able to calm down and fall asleep when I should. Over the years, I have picked up a few tips to help me accomplish the goal of a good night’s rest! Here they are:
- Put your phone and electronics in a place you won’t be tempted to use them – turn off the sound if necessary
- Personal prayer
- Write in your journal, read a book, or other things in this nature to wind down
- Stop thinking about all of the things that went “wrong” throughout the day
- Replay a movie you know well in your head
I love the advice from Dr. Wayne Dyer when he said, “if before dropping off to sleep you are assailed by worry, distress, or fear, do not stay in bed. Get up, turn on the light, take a few deep breaths, read from a spiritual text — do anything other than staying there lying down. When you finally do feel peaceful back in bed, repeat your [positive thoughts] and drift off to sleep.”
When life seems to be getting out of hand and stress arises, I know that getting back to the basics is always the first thing we need to remember. You can’t get much more basic that a good night’s rest!
I hope that the next time you have a hard time falling asleep, one of these tips can help you!
